Materia Nova has a long-term expertise in corrosion protection and evaluation. Alternative to hexavalent chromium is one of the most important goal of the centre in this field :  conversion or passivation treatments, hard chromium deposition or developing new effective anti-corrosive pigments. Evaluation methodologies based on classical ageing tests or on electrochemical techniques are continuously improved to provide deep understanding of corrosion mechanisms or to evaluate coating performances.


  • Development of alternative passivation or conversion treatments based on hybrid organic/inorganic coatings applied by sol gel or by plasma (PECVD)
  • Synthesis of inhibitor nanocontainers as innovative anti-corrosion pigments for self-healing properties
  • Application of cataphoretic coatings and study of the influence of the application parameters (voltage, temperature,…) on the coating performances
  • Development of specific evaluation methods based on electrochemical techniques
  • Evaluation of the compatibility of pretreatments with an organic coatings in terms of adherence, edge protection,… .
