Overall objective:
The objective is to develop a high-performance, lower-cost alternative to Scalmalloy (which contains scandium, a critical and expensive material), with mechanical properties and corrosion resistance specifically tailored to the aerospace applications targeted by the Walloon industrial partners (Sonaca, Safran, AerospaceLab, EHP)
Materia Nova’s tasks:
Development of plasma coatings on aluminium powders (deposition of Zr, followed by Zn and Mg via magnetron sputtering), their physico-chemical characterisation (composition, thickness, homogeneity), assessment of the corrosion resistance of the manufactured components, and conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA) of the process.
