Start of the project: 01-01-2023
End of project: 31-12-2025
General objective
To develop an innovative coating based on a hybrid organic/inorganic chemistry (sol-gel process) without fluorinated compounds (replacing PFAS), making it possible to reduce the frequency and energy consumption of defrosting phases, while improving the heat exchange coefficient thanks to the incorporation of specific fillers. This coating will combine several advanced functionalities: an optimized alternation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains for precise control of condensation and icing; the integration of heating micro-tracks printed directly under the functional layer to activate de-icing locally and efficiently; and the application of micro-structuring techniques that can be industrialized on a large scale to reinforce the coating's superhydrophobic properties on a long-term basis.
Materia Nova's mission
Materia Nova is in charge of managing the project, as well as communicating and disseminating the results. It is responsible for the formulation of UV-curable sol-gel coatings, meso-scale functionalization (milli-, micro- and nanoscale) by transferring micro/nano textures onto hydrophobic sol-gel from textured imprints supplied by Sirris, enabling superhydrophobic properties to be obtained. Materia Nova is also in charge of characterizing and measuring anti-icing performance, as well as manufacturing and validating a representative demonstrator.
