Development of a new type of high-performance and innovative coatings that can be applied by thermal spray systems.

Objectives and missions of Materia Nova

Development of an original manufacturing technique for metallic powders enabling the full range of alloy compositions used in metallic glasses to be easily obtained by combining two technologies: the manufacture of partially pre-alloyed powders by atomization under neutral gas and their modification by the low-pressure plasma PVD technique. Next, the use of powders for the development of a “metallic glass” type coating either by thermal spraying, in particular flame spraying, or by an IonJet torch using atmospheric plasma (collaboration with the company Ionics). The two techniques may be complementary in order to obtain a uniform, adherent coating with a controlled and amorphous composition.


Obtained results: the equipment was acquired in order to test the powders directly. Collaborations with French and Italian partners have been created. We developed the powder introduction system for the plasma torch and optimized the adhesion of the powders on different substrates (polymers and metals).
